Introduction to Reading

At St Andrew's Primary School we value reading and promote a love of books.
Reading is taught following the Read, Write, Inc Phonics Scheme. Chldren have daily phonics teaching in FS2 and Year 1, which conitnues in to Year 2 and Key Stage 2  if needed and is differentiated to ensure that all children are able to make progress.  They have a weekly Guided Reading session with an adult and enjoy shared reading opporutnities in these sessions. Each child has a reading book which is phonetically decodable and links to their phonics learning .
Once children have completed the Read, Write, Inc Phonics Scheme they move on to the Oxford Reading Tree scheme which we also compliment with books from the Pearson Bug Club Independent Reading scheme.  All children continue with a weekly Guided Reading session throughout FS2 and Year 1 moving in Year 2 and Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) to a whole class reading lessons. We also use Bug Club Online which allows the children to access their reading books online as well as having a paper copy but also has many other quality books which allow the children to widen their reading experience and support home learning.
